According to statistics news on March 17th., AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile US and other US companies have spent about a total of $117 billion (US dollars) in the purchase of 5G mid-band spectrum in the past 12 months.
These include:
1. Last year, the purchase of C-band 280 MHz spectrum totaled about $81 billion (US dollars) ,the FCC’s largest ever spectrum auction, after which AT&T and Verizon each spent billions of dollars to get some of those licenses ahead of schedule. This brings the total purchase price of 280 MHz in the C-band to an astonishing $95 billion (US dollars).

2. After about one year of that, a total of $22 billion (US dollars) was spent on mid-band 5G frequencies between 3.45GHz and 3.55GHz.

But at a hearing on “5G and the Future: Exploring the Next Wireless Frontier,” held by the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Energy Communications and Technology, the Wireless Communications and Internet Association (CTIA) said that’s not enough — the U.S. has so far released only 270MHz of mid-band spectrum (IF spectrum), but major countries around the world have provided their own 5G network operators with an average of 650MHz of mid-band spectrum (IF spectrum), so the United States needs to release more spectrum (especially mid-band spectrum) for 5G.
CTIA proposes to release 3.1GHz-3.45GHz, 7.125GHz-8.4GHz, 4GHz first half, 1.3GHz-1.35GHz, 1.124GHz-1.164GHz, 1.78GHz-1.83GHz, 26GHz, 42GHz and 50GHz for 5G。

Analysts commented that it is unclear whether Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Dish Network will have sufficient financing to bid aggressively in future 5G spectrum auctions as they have in the past.
